I think they are too close to us for us to treat them the way we do,

yeah there is a Nova episode on "Snowflake", an albino silverback lowland gorilla from Barcelona. It showed how his family was killed by poachers and he was taken to the zoo because he was different. They had a history segment on how gorillas were kept and that it was solely for human enjoyment and not to take care of the animals. :( Now they are doing more for breeding and releasing but it is still sad to see them in enclosures and far from their natural ways of life (orangutans live 90% of the time in trees but you always see them on the ground in zoos)
